Mosquito and Tickborne Disease

Home 5 Mosquito and Tickborne Disease

The purpose of the Vector Surveillance Program is to notify the public that
diseases transmitted by mosquitoes and ticks are found in Bureau, Putnam and
Marshall Counties as well as educate the public on prevention of diseases such
as West Nile Virus and Lyme Disease. The health department collects
mosquitoes using traps and tests these mosquitoes to determine if they are
positive for West Nile Virus. The health department also collects dead birds and
may test them for West Nile Virus. Ticks are collected by the health department
via “tick drags” and trapping. These ticks are submitted to the Illinois
Department of Public Health as part of their Vector Surveillance and Control
Program.
